Carolyn Keene is actually the pseudonym of the authors of the Nanvy Drew book series. The first and orignial author, Mildred Wirt Benson, was required by contract to maintain confidentiality until a lawsuit in the 1980s broke the silence. Benson wrote the first 23 Nancy Drew books. Subsequent authors of the series agreed to use the name Carolyn Keene as the official writer. Mildred Wirt Benson created the heroine Nancy Drew which has remained a popular culture icon for the last couple decades.
