Jurmain, S. (2006). George Did It. New York, NY: Dutton Children’s Books.

Genre: Biography

Grades: Grades 2-4

Suzanne Tripp Jurmain’s book George Did It is both a factual and humorous account of the biographical story of our nation’s first president – George Washington. George Did It illuminates a very human side of this momentous historical figure and depicts his reluctance, nervousness, and worry in assuming the title of president to a developing, premature nation. Jurmain provides authentic information and direct quotes from the events eight days prior to his inauguration while still showing the emotional turmoil he was experiencing at that time. The bright watercolor illustrations depicted in patriotic hues offer entertaining settings, humorous background details, and life-like character facial expressions. Overall, this book provides memorable quotes and represents George Washington exceptionally well making him both interesting and relatable.
